Israeli Father of Six Killed in West Bank Attack as IDF Captures Suspect

An Israeli father of six was killed Sunday in a shooting attack near a natural spring in the West Bank, and Israeli forces captured the suspected gunman after a rapid manhunt near Ramallah. The victim was identified locally as Netanel Shakron, a hi-tech professional and community member who had gone to the area before Yom Kippur with his eldest son. The attack quickly became a security flashpoint as Israel moved to lock down the surrounding area and pursue possible accomplices.

The shooting took place near Neve Tzuf, also known as Halamish, north of Ramallah. Emergency responders initially fought to save Shakron after he suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but he later died after being evacuated for treatment. Israeli officials said the suspect was wounded near the scene, fled, and was later detained at a hospital in the Ramallah area.

Attack Near a Spring Before Yom Kippur

Shakron had gone to the spring ahead of Yom Kippur, a moment that made the attack especially painful for Israeli communities already on high alert during the holiday period. Emergency medical personnel found him unconscious in a vehicle and began life-saving treatment at the scene before moving him toward hospital care.

Local leaders described Shakron as a devoted husband and father who was known for kindness and humility. His death landed as both a family tragedy and another reminder of the security pressure facing Israeli civilians in contested areas of Judea and Samaria.

IDF Says Commandos Captured the Suspect

The Israel Defense Forces said soldiers from the Duvdevan undercover counterterrorism unit captured the suspect after intelligence work by the Shin Bet and Israel Police. Military officials said a nearby tracker reached the scene shortly after the shooting and fired at the attacker, wounding him before he escaped on foot.

The suspect was later located near a hospital in the Ramallah area and transferred for interrogation. Israeli forces also established roadblocks, closed nearby roads, and moved additional personnel into the area while they searched for anyone who may have helped plan or support the attack.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir visited the scene Sunday and said the military's mission was not finished. Israeli forces were expected to continue operations around the nearby village as investigators worked to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had assistance.

Hamas Praises the Shooting

Hamas praised the shooting in a statement, calling for further attacks in the West Bank and Jerusalem, though it did not clearly claim operational responsibility. That reaction will intensify Israeli concern that the attack could become a rallying point for additional violence during a sensitive religious period.

The attack lands amid another tense stretch in the West Bank, where Israel's broader security and land fights have already drawn international attention after Israel advanced a major E1 housing tender earlier this month. The latest shooting shifts the immediate focus back to counterterror operations, road security, and the threat posed by armed attackers moving between Palestinian population centers and Israeli communities.

What Comes Next

Israeli investigators now face the task of identifying the attacker's network, tracing the weapon, and determining whether any broader cell helped him reach the spring area. If officials conclude others were involved, more arrests and raids could follow quickly.

The political stakes are also clear. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is under constant pressure to protect Israeli civilians while confronting Hamas and other terror groups across multiple fronts. A deadly West Bank shooting just before Yom Kippur gives Israeli security leaders little room for hesitation and is likely to keep the region on elevated alert in the days ahead.
