Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed progressive Florida Senate nominee Angie Nixon on Thursday, pulling the national left into her November race against Trump-backed Republican Sen. Ashley Moody.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has injected herself into Florida's Senate race, endorsing Democratic nominee Angie Nixon in her November showdown with Republican Sen. Ashley Moody. The endorsement, announced Thursday by Nixon's campaign, puts the face of the national progressive movement behind a state lawmaker running on a rent freeze, universal healthcare, and the abolition of the Electoral College.
"At a time when working families are fighting tooth and nail to make ends meet while the Administration sells them out to corrupt special interests, we need to stand behind leaders who are accountable to working people and stand up to greedy corporations," Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement released by the Nixon campaign.
"Angie Nixon will do just that -- from fighting for universal healthcare and childcare to proposing a national rent freeze," she added. "Angie will be an exemplary fighter for the working families of Florida and will do it all without a dime of corporate PAC money."
The endorsement is the clearest sign yet that national progressives plan to pour resources into the Florida contest. Nixon, a state representative from Jacksonville, won the Democratic nomination last month by defeating retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, the former White House aide whose testimony fueled the first impeachment of President Donald Trump.
Nixon cast the endorsement as proof of momentum. "I'm honored to have the endorsement of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her support as we work towards a better future for Florida," she said. "This endorsement adds fuel to an already energized campaign, reinforcing that people are looking forward to real change and representation."
Ocasio-Cortez framed the race in stark terms, describing Nixon as a leader accountable to working people rather than the wealthy and well-connected. The New York progressive has become the Democratic Party's most influential fundraiser outside the White House orbit, and her backing is expected to unlock small-dollar donations from her national donor network.
Nixon faces a steep climb against Moody, whom Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed to the Senate last year after Marco Rubio resigned early to serve as secretary of state. Moody has the backing of President Trump, who campaigned enthusiastically for Republicans in the state he has carried three times.
Trump took note of the Democratic primary result last month, calling Vindman "a real treasonous creep" and predicting Nixon would go down to "certain defeat at the hands of Ashley Moody, a truly Fantastic Senator." The president has long maintained that the phone call at the center of Vindman's testimony was perfect and that the resulting impeachment effort was a political sham.
Florida's shifting electorate complicates Nixon's path. The state has trended hard toward Republicans in recent cycles, and Democrats have struggled to compete up and down the ballot. Moody enters the general election as a clear favorite, with the endorsement of the president and the full weight of the state GOP behind her.
Ocasio-Cortez's blessing also spotlights Nixon's most controversial positions. Resurfaced clips from Nixon's time in the state legislature show her backing the abolition of the Electoral College and advocating ranked-choice voting, proposals that go well beyond the mainstream of even Florida Democrats.
Her policy agenda includes universal healthcare, government-funded childcare, and a national rent freeze -- priorities that align closely with the Ocasio-Cortez wing of the party. Nixon has also pledged to refuse corporate PAC money, a selling point the AOC endorsement amplified.
Republicans are already using the endorsement to tie Nixon to the national left's agenda in a state where such labels have proven costly. The Moody campaign and its allies have cast the race as a choice between Florida's conservative direction and the progressive movement Ocasio-Cortez represents.
The endorsement reshapes the fundraising math of the race and gives Nixon a national platform she lacked after the primary. Whether it moves voters in a state that has drifted away from Democrats is another question entirely.
Watch for Ocasio-Cortez to headline fundraisers and rallies for Nixon in the coming weeks, and for Republicans to keep the progressive label front and center. Florida's special Senate election is shaping up as one of the most closely watched races of the 2026 midterms -- and the left's biggest star just made sure of it.
