Five Shot at Virginia State University as Multiple Suspects Remain at Large

Five people were shot early Saturday morning outside residence halls at Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia, and police say multiple suspects remain at large. The shooting unfolded just days before the fall semester was set to begin at the historically Black university, sending the campus into an hours-long lockdown.

Officers responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. to reports of gunfire near the Quad Annexes in the 3300 block of Boisseau Street, where they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. All five were rushed to area hospitals. One victim, initially listed with life-threatening injuries, has been upgraded to critical condition. The other four sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

University officials confirmed that at least one of the wounded is a VSU student. That student was not seriously hurt and has since been released from the hospital.

Manhunt Underway, No Arrests Made

Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not yet released descriptions of the suspects.

The university said early Saturday that the shooting involved multiple suspects. Investigators spent the morning processing the scene near the dorms as a heavy law enforcement presence blanketed the campus, with officers from multiple agencies visible around the Quad Annexes area.

Campus Lockdown Lifted

VSU placed the campus on lockdown shortly after the shooting and urged students to shelter in place. The lockdown was lifted around 8:22 a.m., with the university saying law enforcement did not believe there was an immediate threat to the campus community.

School officials have asked students and staff to avoid the area while investigators continue processing the scene, and an increased law enforcement presence will remain on campus as the probe continues. Students have been told to monitor their university email for safety updates and information about support services.

A Campus on Edge Before the Fall Semester

The shooting comes at a delicate moment for VSU, a public historically Black university founded in 1882 with a proud legacy in the Virginia state system. The fall semester is scheduled to begin Monday, and the violence has cast a shadow over what should have been a week of move-in and welcome activities.

It also marks the latest in a string of shooting incidents near college campuses across the country this year, reigniting familiar questions about public safety, campus security, and the response times of university and local law enforcement.

As the manhunt continues and the semester looms, the university community is left waiting for answers. Investigators have promised additional updates as the case develops, and students will head into the new school year with an increased police presence on the grounds.
